AMBIENT LIGHT GALLERY
iN 2021, After a dark year, we are beginning to see a little light around us. “Ambient” light is the atmosphere that surrounds and illuminates an environment, whether real or imagined. Over the past year, five artists: Elisabeth Hudgins, Kat Jamieson, Linda Maldonado, Elise Ritter and Deborah Taylor as the members of Studio 10 artist collaborative have met via weekly Zooms to explore the compelling theme of Ambient Light through their own lens and filters, as well as their medium of choice: watercolor, oil, acrylic, collage, and ink. Along the way, they discover that ambient light can be physical or spiritual; external or internal; real or imagined. With unique style and vision, each uses creative inspiration as a guide out of darkness into the light.
Energy in Light
My artist’s eye is constantly considering Ambient Light.
In this body of work, I went looking for the light that shines through and reveals something that was once unknown or unrecognized. I also kept in mind that light creates energy. That was my starting point. I wanted to capture light which is felt or perceived… which can either be an internal or external light, while highlighting the kinetic energy of light.
Many of my paintings reflect an innermost light, light from within my subject. Others reveal an external light, light that shines forth to dispel a darkness. I used a technique for interpreting this light which involves watery layers of acrylic paint. I manipulate the paint around my paper with water, heat, and movement. Rarely do I use a paintbrush.
My goal is for my artwork to maintain a sense of energy, mystery, rhythm, vibrancy………and of course, reveal the Ambient Light.
