Spirit of Place: Landscape: Mountain Stream and Ocean Wave
I am drawn to Watery places...and in Virginia, we're fortunate to have an abundance of watery places.
Our mountain streams flow from quietly seeping springs deep in the hills, as they have for eternity. Gentle rivulets of water gather to make their way over the rocks and pebbles, inviting my close inspection, and then move downhill to the rivers, the bay and eventually the ocean.
At the ocean, I observe the movement of water in waves. The crashing energy is relentless and timeless, but unique in each wave that washes onto the shore.
There is a juxtaposition between the quiet flow of mountain streams and the energy of ocean waves, yet a similarity in their perpetual movement within the Virginia landscape.
Working intuitively, I focus on interpreting the feelings that I get from observation. My process captures the movement of water across the surface of the paper. I rarely use a brush but instead let the paint flow...as though it were an ocean wave or mountain stream.
