Be Square (It's Hip to Be....)

What a concept! The Arlington Artists Alliance is having a show, called Be Square, currently on display at the Gallery Underground in Crystal City. 41 Artists of very different genres were given 2 8"x 8" canvas squares and let loose to create their Squares. It's actually really hard to paint in a square format (at least it was for me!) because it is so very symmetrical. So either you embrace that symmetry or you break up the symmetry.  Since I am a pretty symmetrical person, I chose to stick with the symmetrical aspect for the most part. Here are my 2 pieces, Missing Persons and Outside In. If you get a chance, check out the show before the end of September.... It's amazing to see the diversity of  the pieces the artists have produced considering they all started with the same guidelines and format!

Over at Examiner.com, James George, the intrepid Arts Reporter for Arlington has written a nice article about my upcoming show. You can find it here.

Let me tell you about Jim, in his "previous life" he has been a magazine publisher and has served on the boards of theater and dance companies, and he is a published author. His wife and daughter are both "creatives" and artists. Jim is genuinely interested in all that goes on in the art world, and especially in the with local area. He enjoys "matchmaking" and putting artists together with those who support the arts. If you are an artist, I encourage you to get in touch with Jim, and tell him about your work... tell him I sent you!

My Mixed Media Painting was selected for the annual "Scapes" exhibit at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. Stop by and see all the great work! Info can be found here. The exhibit was juried by Johnathon Linton, and the prospectus stated:

Our landscape has been visually rendered since the beginning of time and remains one of the most beloved subjects in art. For ‘Scapes, the annual August landscape exhibit at The Art League Gallery, artists are invited to submit works illustrating all elements of our external world.
Landscape art portrays the world around us. However, a landscape artist is not a camera that records whatever happens to be in front of the lens. He or she is not required to paint exactly what he sees.

Artwork inspired by all environments may be a part of this exhibit – urban and rural, industrialized and primitive, coastal and arid, and the beauty and destruction created by Mother Nature. Works of all media may be submitted. Artists are encouraged to explore unique perspectives, literally and figuratively, as well as varying moods and color.

New Mixed Media Work at Stifel & Capra

8/5/2012

I have installed some new work at Stifel & Capra for the month of August....
One of the pieces is titled "dreams and high imaginings". I came across that scrap of a sentence in my "bits and pieces" folder.... left over from a previous project (all mixed media artists are pack rats!), and built this piece around the phrase. Mixed media is a good desciption of this as I mixed in the following media: vintage family photo, vintage postcards, old french textbook, lace, my sketches of dragonflies, real butterfly wings, handmade paper, and watercolor.

Limb Letter won an Honorable Mention. It is part of my Common Threads Series of Mixed Media paintings. The series is an exploration of personal histories. My interest was sparked when I was clearing out an old family home… In among the treasures and trash were a cache of family photos, some labeled, many not. It made me curious about those people in the past, what did they think, feel, do? What was important to them? Who made a difference? How are they connected to each other and to us? What are the common threads?

In starting a painting, often I begin with a story to tell, but sometimes the story emerges from the artwork. Sometimes, the story is elusive. My process involves working with layers, transparencies and double exposures, by utilizing collage, photo transfers, paint, found objects, and monoprinting in my artwork. As I build up layers, earlier surfaces sometimes disappear, like memories, layered beneath fresh elements. At times, I peel away top layers to reveal what is underneath.  Visual elements often found in my artwork include: leaves, trees, portraits of people, quilts and fabrics and threads. To me these represent families and their history, and the links the past has to the present.

I have been an artist all of my life. I can't help it. Drew on the walls in kindergarten, painted pictures in high school, went to Art School, worked as an art director, started painting again. And am loving it.
