The Arlington Artists Alliance is having a show, called Be Square, currently on display at the Gallery Underground in Crystal City. 41 Artists of very different genres were given 2 8"x 8" canvas squares and let loose to create their Squares. It's actually really hard to paint in a square format (at least it was for me!) because it is so very symmetrical. So either you embrace that symmetry or you break up the symmetry. Since I am a pretty symmetrical person, I chose to stick with the symmetrical aspect for the most part. Here are my 2 pieces, Missing Persons and Outside In. If you get a chance, check out the show before the end of September.... It's amazing to see the diversity of the pieces the artists have produced considering they all started with the same guidelines and format!
Corn Bouquet by Elisabeth Hudgins
This watercolor painting, "Corn Bouquet" is a commissioned piece I did last winter. It has an interesting story... A patron of mine wanted to give his wife an anniversary gift that reminded her of a piece of "family lore". When they first started dating, he was asked to her home to have dinner with her family to Meet The Parents. He, thoughtfully, brought along some..........Corn. Ever since, her family has teased him about how romantic he was to bring her a Bouquet of Corn. Well, I say he more than made up for it, 25 years later, when he commissioned a painting for his bride of the famous Corn Bouquet. Extra husband points!! My paintings are on sale at Stifel & Capra! This is the once a year Anniversary Sale, and many of the artists celebrate by putting some of their paintings on sale (not normally something artists do!). I have a selection of my framed watercolor paintings on display, all marked down. This watercolor, titled "Purple and Gold" is included in the sale. Stifel & Capra is located at 260 West Broad Street in Falls Church, VA 22046. My art studio is locate there, along with about a dozen other artist, and it's a vibrant place. Theresa and her husband, Bob run the place, and Theresa is an artist too. She came up with the vision of combining Local Art with Funky Vintage Finds to create Stifel & Capra. You can find Art, cards, jewelry, stained glass pieces, CeCe Caldwell paint, vintage furniture, Art, antique tools, mid century cocktail shakers, Art, frames, upcycled clothing, stylish hats, and, did I mention Art? And this weekend, alot of it is on sale! So go and have fun!

I had such a good time talking with reporter Donna Cedar-Southworth and Editor Alice Ross. They truly are supporters of the Arts, and show that through their great work with elan Magazine. Elan featured my "Common Threads" series of paintings, even publishing one on their Table of Contents. Below is the rest of the article. Getting ready for the big FIRSTfriday gathering at Stifel & Capra tomorrow! I hung new paintings in my studio, and spiffed things up a bit.... Apparently, I was in a rather monochromatic mood... as witnessed by the mostly black and white images I hung. Except for that burst of pink in the middle, reminding us all that since it is March, spring (and cherry blossoms for us in the Washington, DC area) should be here soon. And I can't wait. In the meantime, mosey on down to Falls Church and Stifel & Capra for FIRSTfriday. |
Elisabeth HudginsI have been an artist all of my life. I can't help it. Drew on the walls in kindergarten, painted pictures in high school, went to Art School, worked as an art director, started painting again. And am loving it. Archives
