This sweet little pen and ink on hand made paper, entitled "Dog in Repose" sold this month at Gallery Underground. I am so happy this little dachshund has found a good home. I did a series of sketches a while back of a friends beloved dachshund, Max. He has since gone on to dog heaven but is not to be forgotten... a little dog with a big personality! I love doing these pen and ink sketches, because it is challenging to distill an image (or a dogs personality) down to a few strokes of the pen! My challenge is always to see how few stokes I can make.

Well, I am pretty excited that my painting, "Across the Universe" won FOURTH PLACE in the Audi Arlington Art Showcase held this week. You might say "Fourth Place?, no big deal" but I was excited because I was up against some amazing Arlington Artists Alliance artists (not to mention the really great, up and coming Art Institute of Washington Artists), but I was also awarded a cash prize! Pretty unusual these days... Really what was great was the amazing support that the Rosenthal Automotive Group showed community artists by letting us participate in this contest. And, I am sooooo proud of my fellow Arlington Artists Alliance members, Dana Saxerud for her third place winner, and Nancy Murphree Davis and Pattee Hipschen for the tie for first place. Fabulous artists, all! It's getting cold outside and the Holidays are right around the corner, and I hate going to the Mall! Good thing there are some wonderful pop-up Shoppertunities in the area! I am pleased to say that one of my pieces was juried in, and so I will be at the Reception from 7 to 8pm. I hope you can make it too! Here are the details on that! The nights are cooler, the sun sets earlier, the leaves are starting to change color.... And I start looking at leaves I want to paint! Really, as I am walking along, all of a sudden I look down and see leaf shapes and patterns, so I pick them up and make my watercolor monotype paintings that I like to call Leaf Impressions. "Sycamore" which is printed from a HUGE Sycamore leaf, will be on exhibit at the Gallery Underground for the month of October. I love painting these Leaf Impressions, because there is that unknown element.... the mystery and surprise of not quite knowing what the outcome will be. Here's a Painting Demo how I do it.... What a concept! The Arlington Artists Alliance is having a show, called Be Square, currently on display at the Gallery Underground in Crystal City. 41 Artists of very different genres were given 2 8"x 8" canvas squares and let loose to create their Squares. It's actually really hard to paint in a square format (at least it was for me!) because it is so very symmetrical. So either you embrace that symmetry or you break up the symmetry. Since I am a pretty symmetrical person, I chose to stick with the symmetrical aspect for the most part. Here are my 2 pieces, Missing Persons and Outside In. If you get a chance, check out the show before the end of September.... It's amazing to see the diversity of the pieces the artists have produced considering they all started with the same guidelines and format! |
Elisabeth HudginsI have been an artist all of my life. I can't help it. Drew on the walls in kindergarten, painted pictures in high school, went to Art School, worked as an art director, started painting again. And am loving it. Archives
